The day before my birthday I took a ride to the river because I knew the morning of my birthday I had an appointment at my nearby Subaru dealer to have a wiring harness installed.  Unsure of how long it would take, I planned on the morning being "taken."

It turns out, I was right.  Leaving the dealership which is only 12 miles away, I drove home, grabbed something quick to eat, then headed to one of the Eagle nest sites (7 miles one way from home), then returned home.

Later that day I wanted to get my car inspected for emissions.  Well, that never came to fruition...because the dash was lit up like a Christmas tree!  Not only was my CHECK ENGINE LIGHT glowing a bright red, but also the HILL ASSIST, TRACTION CONTROL and CRUISE CONTROL were all on!!

Calling the dealer from the parking lot I tuned around in, I was told to bring the car back in on Wednesday morning.  Yes, as you can imagine, I was there earlier than expected, handed them the keys and sat in the waiting room thinking...hmmmm, on December 3rd, the dealership did a 60K maintenance check on my car (which cost me $900.00) and here it was December 29th.  It seemed mighty coincidental that their service department installed a wiring harness ($350.00)...connecting it to my electrical system the day before...and here I was with very apparent electrical issues.

Time passed but my attitude didn't and a few hours later, when I asked what was wrong, I was told, "I honestly don't know.  We couldn't read the code from diagnostics, so they cleaned the connectors and reset the computer system.  But IF the ENGINE LIGHT comes on, it could mean you have a problem."

A few days later, I spoke with my friend John who gave me a new mechanic's name and address.

 seeing, saying, sharing...

Did the new mechanic know what was wrong? And how were you able to drive home, if you left your car at the dealers? Maybe post a part 2...

Mighty suspicious that you should have all those issues right after they put in a new wiring harness. Sounds to me like someone messed something up and they don't want to admit it.

All this fancy stuff is great when it works. Good luck.

Dang, I'd be calling thier North American Headquarters and squawking non-stop!
one of my highest rant rates goes to Auto Mechanics and the lies they tell and how much they cheat us. we are at their mercy. I bet you did not need that harness at all. my hubby is a mechanic, when he worked for Midas Muffler for only one year, they wanted them to cheat. if the car needed only brake pads, they were to sell a whole brake system. hubby knows they don't need it and refused to write down anything but what he found wrong. that did not go well, we don't trust any place we take it and that goes for ALL the dealers, all of them are ripoffs and charge for things not needed.
It's hard to trust that mechanical things (cars, refrigerators, heaters) will perform when needed. They seem to have a second sense of when it will be the worst time to break down. - Margy
