The Walking Stick...A Story

Cool, right?  It was the oddest way to meet someone but it happened.  I went in to our local Verizon store and there were about four people in front of me.  I decided to wait.  There, to my left, was a woman sitting, waiting also.  Next to her, was a beautiful walking stick.

When I commented on what an awesome stick it was, she told me that it was hers and that she suffers from lyme disease which has become debilitating.  She needs it to help her get around.  She then told me that she made it!  We chatted talking about so many things...for about 15 minutes before she was called over to the next rep.

When the young woman from a Verizon desk way in the back of the huge store walked over to get the next her, Diane (the woman I was chatting with) grimaced and said, "Are you really going to make me walk all that way?"

Struggling to get up off the small black stool, she began a slow uneasy walk trailing behind the rep.  Her balance and coordination were not good.  It was sad...very sad.

We had already exchanged cell numbers and lives close by so the next day I called her asking if she had any of her sticks for sale.  Telling me the day before that she uses the money towards her grandkids college fund, I thought why not?

So we hooked up in the library parking lot and of the selection she had with her, this is the one I selected.  She thought it suited me too.

As you can see by the pix, every little "nub" has an animal's face...or what looks like an animal's face.  They remind me of those I imagine that live...wild and free...on the Serengeti.

That is a cool walking stick. What a fun story to go with it too. I wish I was more like that, meeting people everywhere I go. If I'm standing in line I never talk to the people around me.
Such a cool walking stick, I can see why you wanted one!

That is a great walking stick and that lady is creative. There are so many wonderful people out there to meet :) Thanks for linking up and have a great weekend.
That is a fantastic walking stick. How great that you met her. Her Lyme Disease story is sad. I've heard it can become quite debilitating if not caught early, and cause many problems.
