No More Shrooms

Participating in a relatively short hike towards the end of September, the 4 mile jaunt was going to explore a place I've often wanted to visit.  Although permission was needed to access the privately owned land, it was a history lesson waiting to be told.  I LOVE history.

The fields that we walked passed were once a huge mushroom farm opened in 1978 which supplied grocery chains, restaurants and locals, producing 27 million pounds of mushrooms about 500,000 pounds a week!  However, to the locals surprise the approximately 380 employees were let go because the entire plant and it's operation were relocating to PA.  Making the announcement of their departure in the Spring of 2006, it was a shock to the nearby entities.  However, the company had no choice because of rising energy costs, raw materials, diesel fuel and transportation with pricing being much cheaper in PA.

Located not far from the river, while walking we came across a hand-dug well remnants there of a homestead that once stood.  In fact, the two huge flat front stone steps could still be seen when the leaf litter was moved aside.  Stepping on them, you could almost feel that you were entering the small house breathing in the aroma of homemade bread!
