Easter Eggs
Observing the behavior of the Bald Eagles over the past few weeks has been positive. While last year the eggs were deemed non-viable and the nest marked as "failed," this year appears to be promising.
Although the nest is 263 yds away from my viewing area, to avoid disrupting one of their "sensitive" times, I've only been staying for short visits.
The timing of my visits has been calculated based doing the math and experience and has paid off. Not only have the adults been in the proper incubating position (sitting low), I have also seen them rotate the eggs (reach down to turn the eggs), swap (where the incoming adult takes over incubation relieving the outgoing adult for a few hours), and settle down on the eggs, back end first, and rocking sideways.
While all of this may sound silly, these are all key behaviors indicating the incubation of eggs. It all began on or around 03/14 which would estimate hatch to be on/around 04/17 (based on a 35 day hatch).
Resorting only to my scope, bean bag, and cell phone for the time being, I've scaled back on equipment for now.
However, from hatch to fledge (mid-Apr-mid Jul), I will increase my photos/recordings to share with the organization I volunteer with for a presentation.
