"Blobs"

Many have asked me how I locate Eagles when they're perched.  Most of the time the adults are easy to spot because of their unmistakable white head.  As for the immatures (from one to three years anyway), I simply say to look for "blobs"...big blobs in the branches.

The turning white of their heads and tails, along with changes in eye and beak color become more noticeable on a fourth year bird.   This is a 3rd year bird showing more white on the head, the "Osprey" eye coloration as well as the patch of white between the shoulders.

The bird to the left is a 4th year bird while the bird on the right is a first year meaning it hatched in 2020 and will turn one in April.  (We assume all Eagles here hatch in April.)

seeing, saying, sharing...
